What makes PNW Birthbabes different from other doulas?
Choosing a doula can be hard, you want them to inspire trust, confidence and comfort. You need to feel like they have your back no matter what (we really do!). Our doulas have been trained by some of the best, most experienced doulas who have decades of experience. We do ongoing trainings covering topics like TENS usage for pain relief, bereavement, VBAC specific support, and much more. We are also different in that our doulas are also trained birth photographers. Taking amazing pictures at births is much more complex than just pointing a camera towards mom and requires a different skill-set than family portraits or wedding photography. We have undergone several months of birth-specific training with some of the most respected birth photography training schools.

How soon should I book a doula/birth photographer?
As soon as you are pregnant! But really, you would want to book by your 6th month so that there is time to schedule both prenatal visits and practice using comfort measures before your baby’s arrival. If you’ve already passed that date, not to worry, reach out and if we are still available for the timeframe of your birth we would be happy to take you as a client. If not, we can recommend other local doulas to contact.

Will my partner have nothing to do at the birth because I have a doula?
Not at all! Doulas are there to support both the birthing person and their partner. We can teach the partner how to implement comfort measures during a prenatal but they can rely on us to give suggestions on which to use when during the birth. Also, your partner is usually far more in tune with you than your doula, so they will likely be your first source of comfort. Finally, doulas don’t make decisions for you about your birth, as it unfolds if decisions need to be made for the health of you or the baby, it will be up to your partner to make those choices with you. The doula can only help you to understand your options.

Is a doula really worth that price?
People who have had a birth experience with a doula will tell you it was priceless. Doulas have been proven to shorten labor in hospital settings, lower the usage of c-sections and epidurals, and contribute to an overall positive birth experience. Doula fees may seem high but considering the time and care we lavish on our clients, the fact that we are on-call 24/7 for your birth, often stay at a labour for many hours, and are committed to increasing our own knowledge and the things we can offer to clients, the fees are very reasonable.

What payment options are there?
At the moment we do not accept insurance, but we expect to be approved Medicaid providers in 2026. Payment plans are available with full payment required by week 35 of pregnancy.

Tell me more about the photography?
Birth photography is not like having family pictures done. We are fly’s on the wall. You won’t even know we are there documenting all the little moments of your baby’s arrival. You will receive a sneak peek of 2-3 pictures within 24 hours and the full album about 2 weeks after your birth.
Newborn photography is booked prior to the birth and scheduled the day of or day after the birth for a date when the baby is between 5 and 15 days old. You will bring the baby to our studio location where they will be dressed and posed by our professionally trained newborn photographer. Please don’t entrust your newborn to a photographer without specialized training.
