Finding the Perfect Lacey, WA Newborn Photographer: Get The Right Questions to Ask

If you're a new parent, you're probably overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make.

Stressing over Newborn photography doesn't have to be one of them. Let me guide you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to capture the early moments of your baby's life.

Let's dive into some of the most common questions about newborn photography.

“What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer?”

It's important to choose a photographer who specializes in newborn photography and has experience working with infants. Many photographers will throw their hat into the ring for every type of photography and say they specialize in them all - but shooting a newborn is very different from shooting a senior session or a wedding or real estate. At my studio, I have years of experience working with newborns and their families. I'm dedicated to providing a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable experience for you and your baby. I understand the importance of capturing these early moments, and I take pride in creating beautiful, timeless memories that you'll cherish for years to come.

“When do I need to book my session? I don’t know exactly when my little one will arrive!”

To capture the best moments, it's important to schedule your newborn photography session as early as possible, ideally within the first two weeks of your baby's life. I recommend booking your session as soon as possible during your pregnancy to ensure availability. The way I work is if you book while pregnant, you simply inform me within a few days of baby’s birth and we schedule from there.

And if your baby has a stay in the NICU or you have complications and are not feeling up to a session in those first two weeks, we can reschedule for when baby and you are released from the hospital. Just know that some poses and props require a smaller, sleepier baby. But I promise you will still get amazing photographs which you will love!

“What can I expect during a newborn photography session?”

During a newborn photography session, I'll work to create a comfortable and safe environment for your baby. The studio itself is kept at around 70 degrees but there will be additional heat directed toward baby as they cannot yet regulate their body temperature. You may want to wear short sleeves.

Generally the session is for baby only, but we can include a shot or two of siblings or parents if desired. We would do that photo first before capturing baby alone. The session is usually two hours long to allow time for feedings and diaper changes. If you have any specific poses or props in mind, I'm always happy to incorporate your ideas and preferences into the session. I’ve done themed shoots but I prefer a more timeless approach, so I have on-hand a limited palette and only a few props.

“Do I need to bring anything?”

You don't need to bring much to the session as most of the items your baby will need will be provided by the studio, including props, backdrops, and blankets. However, I encourage you to bring a few personal items that you would like to incorporate into the photos, like a special blanket or toy (this is optional)!

“When will I get my photos?”

After the session, you can expect to receive the final edited photos within 2-3 weeks. These will be sent to you electronically and can bring printed at the lab of your choice. Your price includes at least 10 photos including two or more set ups - one prop and the flat backdrop. How many changes will depend on baby’s temperment and willingness to be changed.

“How much does newborn photography cost?”

Newborn photography sessions in Thurston and Pierce counties can range from $200 to $3,000, depending on the photographer and package. I know this might seem like a significant investment, but keep in mind that newborn photography is a specialized service that requires a lot of time, effort, and equipment.

I caution against choosing the very cheapest newborn photographers as they will likely not have taken hands-on live courses in infant posing safety or may have equipment that is no better than what you yourself have. That being said, I am on the low end of price primarily because I only offer digital files and the majority of my newborn photography clients were also clients for birth photography or doula assistance.

So, there you have it! Newborn photography is a wonderful way to capture the early moments of your baby's life and I do my best to take care of all the details, so all you have to do is show up!
